Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc.

Pneumonia causes the alveoli (air sacs) to become inflamed and fill with fluid.

This can lead to a number of symptoms listed below.


Pneumonia Symptoms

Symptoms of pneumonia may include:

  • Cough

    • May be productive (produces phlegm)

  • Shortness of breath (dyspnea)

  • Fast breathing (tachypnea - increased respiratory rate)

  • Fever

  • Chest pain

    • May be worse with coughing or taking a deep breath (pleuritic)

  • Fatigue

  • Confusion (especially the elderly)

  • Increased heart rate (tachycardia)

  • Decreased appetite

  • Bluish skin, lips, etc. (cyanosis)

  • Headache

  • Body aches
